Smile WM Radio

Smile West Midlands is a radio project; encouraging BAME communities to share their news, views and experiences on community radio.

Smile WM is a partnership project between Birmingham based community organisations Bright Young Minds and ARK Foundation.

Bright Young Minds is a registered charity; working with children, young people and families, championing good citizenship, anti-bullying, anti-knife crime and issues associated with child poverty.

ARK Foundation is a registered not-for-profit organisation supporting the African, Caribbean and South American communities with the mission to help build strong community purposed infrastructures that are self-sustainable.

There is something for everyone to get involved in and our radio training is accessible to all over the age of 16 and is delivered online.

Online Radio Presenter


We are delivering an online introductory series of workshops over four weeks. 

During this time, participants will gain an insight into presenting their radio show and best practice in managing/operating a radio station.

Each presenter will have the opportunity to present a regular show online from home.

New Narrative

Everyone has a story to share. This project aims to encourage unknown writers; develop radio drama productions and presenters to co-create a new narrative highlighting their distinctive cultures.

These cultural monologues and short stories will help illustrate the obstacles and achievements experience living in Birmingham and countries of origin.

Employment and Access to
Higher Education 

After completing a short course, successful candidates will have the opportunity to join a 6-month accredited training course. 

Participants will learn industry-standard skills that will include; training in radio studio equipment; programme and advert production, interview techniques, digital editing, news reading, presenting and building self-confidence within a workplace environment.
